Tour de France in Ripley

Ripley Castle

Ripley sees the Tour de France as its chance to shine, and it is determined to make the most of it. The Harrogate Advertiser quotes Lady Emma Ingilby: 'It's one of the world's biggest events - this doesn't happen every day. It's not enough to make a day of it. We are going French for a full two weeks.'

Ripley is on the route of stage 1 of the 2014 Tour de France, just a few miles short of the finish in Harrogate. Up to 12,000 people may watch the Tour there.

Tour de France in Ripley: what's on

In the run-up to the Tour, there'll be a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (24th June to 13th July 2014). The camping and caravanning facilities are opening on Friday 27th June, a week before the Tour. There are to be French-themed menus at the Boar's Head and in the tearooms from Saturday 28th June, and there'll be a food market, with produce from Yorkshire and France, on Sunday 29th June. See the Ripley Castle's Tour site for more details.

The Advertiser says that the castle's head gardener is growing 6,000 red, white, and blue petunias, to make a French flag 10m x 12m, visible to the TV helicopters.

Tour de France in Ripley: race day

On Saturday 5th July, there'll be children's activities (including face painting, bouncy castle, climbing wall, and jousting), food and drink, wcs, and parking. (The parking will be available on Sunday 6th July, too, for anyone wishing to cycle from Ripley to see the stage 2; £10 per vehicle per day).

On the evening of Saturday 5th, there's a free concert at the Star Club (in the Town Hall), with the Doghouse Doctors, Area 40, and Travis Riley Band.

Tour de France in Ripley: campsite

Ripley Castle say they have an agreement with the Camping & Caravanning Club, so their members can stay on the Ripley Showfield (min. 7 night stay). Non-members can pay £20 per night for camping (tent, caravan, or motorhome), but again there is a minimum of 7 nights. The campsite will be open from 27th June to 14th July, and it is suggested people may wish to stay on after the Tour for the Great Yorkshire Show.

At the time of writing (27th May 2014), the Ripley Castle site says there are still four rooms left at the Boar's Head.

Tour de France in Ripley: road closures

Ripley Castle's Tour de France site says the roads will be closed from 10am  to 6pm on Saturday 5th July 2014. This means they close later than in Harrogate, where there roads will be closed from 4am. Incidentally, it's easy to cycle from Ripley to Harrogate via the Nidderdale Greenway. (See information on Tour de France road closures in Yorkshire).
