Where to watch the elite men's individual time trial, UCI 2019
Yorkshire Worlds
Harry the
World Champion bear at Masham
The elite
men's individual time trial at the UCI 2019 Yorkshire Worlds takes
place on Wednesday 25th September 2019. The route from Northallerton to
Harrogate is 54km. It's quite flat until Bedale, then there's a series
of dips down to rivers and streams, with a rise the other side each
time.
My suggestions for where to watch include Northallerton, Bedale,
Masham, Kirkby Malzeard, Ripley, and Harrogate. Of course, any spot by
the roadside would do just as well; outside of the towns and villages, I
guess there will be less atmosphere (so Russ Abbot will
eschew such locations), but it might be easier to get good photos.
Where to watch the elite men's individual time trial: Northallerton
Northallerton
The elite men's individual time trial starts in Northallerton.
There should be lots going on, with commentary and possibly a big
screen showing race action. Riders from the different nations will be
warming up before they take to the start ramp.
I imagine it will be an exciting and memorable day in Northallerton.
Where to watch the elite men's individual time trial: Bedale
Bedale
Not that the competitors will have time to notice, this is a route of
towns with stepped market crosses, and Bedale is the second of those.
Bedale celebrated hosting a finish on the Tour de Yorkshire 2019, and
made a great success of it. There is every reason to believe that it
will embrace its World Championship experience too.
There should be lots of people watching the competitors come past in
Bedale.
Where to watch the elite men's individual time trial: Masham
World Champion bear, Masham
Masham featured in the Tour de France in 2014, and in editions of the
Tour de Yorkshire since then.
It's on the route of both the men's and women's road races, as well
as the elite men's individual time trial, so the World Championships
are definitely coming to Masham!
The hill up towards the centre of Masham (Silver Street) would be a
good place to watch; there may also be stalls and entertainment on the
Market Place.
Where to watch the elite men's individual time trial: Kirkby
Malzeard
Kirkby Malzeard
Kirkby Malzeard is quite small, but this is a route through the
countryside rather than around a great Metropolis.
The hill up from Kex Beck is quite steep, so could be a good spot to
see riders going a bit slower, and suffering!
Where to watch the elite men's individual time trial: Ripley
Tour de France monument, Ripley
Ripley was on the route of the 2014 Tour de France, and the village
created a permanent reminder of that day by commissioning a dry stone
wall monument that looks fantastic.
Ripley features in the World Championships, including the elite men's
individual time trial.
(I might be tempted to go a little way north of Ripley, and stand
near the Oakwood Business Park or the Chequers Inn, so as to see the
riders approach from quite a distance on that long, straight section
of road).
Where to watch the elite men's individual time trial: Harrogate
Parliament St, on the
UCI 2019 Harrogate circuit
There are no laps of the Harrogate circuit on the elite men's time
trial - after taking Swan Road to the Royal Pump Rooms, the
competitors come back to the A61 on Crescent Road and head up
Parliament Street to the West Park finish line.
Even without any laps, Harrogate will be a good place to watch the
action. The fan park on West Park Stray is to have big screens showing
the race, so you can see the riders cross the finish line live, and
follow the overall race situation.
