Today's race is to the east of Lyon.

One Lyon speciality is quenelle, oval shaped dumplings typically filled with creamed fish.

Poulet Célestine contains chicken, mushroom and tomatoes in a sauce made with cognac, white wine and spices. It was invented by Jacques Rousselot as a way of expressing his feelings for beautiful widow and restaurant manager Célestine.

Beaujolais is a short hop and skip north of Lyon, so Beaujolais wines are often drunk in the city.

Stage 17 Tour de France 2026: Route Notes

The stage starts in Chambéry (départ fictif).

Chambéry

Chambéry is an important town in the Savoie département. It was the historic capital of the counts, later dukes, of Savoie.

It was in 1295 that the Count of Savoie Amadeus V made Chambéry his capital, and that status lasted until 1563, when they moved to Turin. The House of Savoy went on to become kings of Italy. In 1860, the former lands of the House of Savoie on the French side of the Alps became part of France, under Napoléon III. The Kingdom of Italy was formed in 1861, then Italy became a Republic at the end of World War II.

The château of the Counts of Savoie still stands in Chambéry. It is used for the administration of the département of Savoie.

The elephant fountain was built in 1838 in honour of Général de Boigne, who made his fortune in India. It is nicknamed les quatres sans cul, since the pachyderms have no backsides. The General stands on a column above them.

Chambéry has a large student population; the total population of Chambéry is around 60,000 people. Olivier Giroud is from Chambéry.

The départ réel is in Chambéry-le-Haut on the D991 Avenue d'Aix-les-Bains.

The race goes through Viviers-du-Lac then along the D1201 Bord du Lac, on the shore of the Lac du Bourget.

The Lac du Bourget

The Lac du Bourget is the largest natural glacial lake in France (not counting Lac Léman, which is partly in Switzerland). It was formed at the end of the last ice age, around 19,000 years ago.

The lake is 44.5km2 in surface area, 18km long, and between 1.6 and 3.5km wide. The maximum depth is 145m.

The Lac du Bourget became very polluted, and from the 1970s action was taken to clean it up.

The lake is of major ecological interest, and home to many species of fish and birds, as well as being a haven for migrating birds. Reed beds have been restored at the southern end of the lake, and the European pond turtle has been successfully reintroduced. The kingfisher also prospers amongst the reeds.

The race arrives at Aix-les-Bains.

Aix-les-Bains is a spa town with the largest fresh water marina in France.

It was occupied in Roman times because of its hot springs, and it was a vicus dependent on Vienne.

The Roman Funeral Arch of Campanus still stands, and it represented the passage to the afterlife.

The baths were ruined after the end of the Roman period, and Aix is not mentioned again until 867AD.

Henri IV came to take the waters in 1600. A new bathing establishment was built under the Dukes of Savoie in the late 1700s. The Casino Grand-Cercle was opened in 1850.

Aix was a holiday town for wealthy aristocrats in the Belle Epoque (1871-1914). Queen Victoria came in 1885, 1887 and 1890.

It still attracts tourists, but not all of them come here for spa treatments these days.

Stage 17 leaves Aix-les-Bains on the D911 to Cusy.

The riders continue to a height of 620m near Point de l'Abîme. They then descend to the river Chéran near Lescheraines.

Next the route is on the D59 Route du Cimeteret, climbing in the Bauges mountains.

From Aillon-le-Jeune, Stage 17 climbs to the Col des Prés (1,135m).

The descent is to Thoiry and Saint-Jean-d'Arvey, and then we're back to Chambéry.

The race leaves Chambéry heading south west on the D1006 Route de Lyon to Saint-Thibaud-de-Couz and Les Echelles.

The riders continue on the D1006, now by the Guiers river. They reach Saint-Béron then the outskirts of Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin.

Now the race crosses the river and follows the D82 Route de la Chartreuse to Saint-Albin-de-Vaulserre and Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine.

The Stage 17 finish town is Voiron, in the Isère département and close to Grenoble.

It is regarded as a gateway to the Chartreuse mountains.

Traditionally, Voiron produced canvas from hemp. In the 1800s, it switched to making silk.

The Rossignol ski company was founded in 1907, and migrants from Italy were amongst its workers.

The Chartreuse Distillery is in Voiron, continuing the tradition of making Chartreuse liqueurs to a recipe developed by the monks of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. The distillery is a popular tourist destination.

Voiron is twinned with Droitwich Spa.
